Personal History:
Okada Izou (Type-Moon Wiki)
Okada Izō (Fate/Grand Order Wiki)

From the FGO Wiki:
"Considered to be one of the four great assassins of the Bakumatsu Period, his nickname "Man-slayer Izō" was well-earned. Ono Ittouryu, Kyoushin Meichiryu, and Jikishiryu are just some of the disciplines in which he was trained. After carrying out multiple assassinations, he was eventually captured and executed.

While he can be boastful of his talents and tends to look down upon other swordsmen, his talent with the sword, often described as being "as swift and powerful as a falcon," was undoubtedly remarkable."

Personality: Izō is rude and makes no attempt to change this or pretend. He sees no point in pretending he's anything but what he is and very upfront about what he does (that being murder). His usual manner of speaking is coarse; even for the Master's birthday, his line is something to the effect of "It's your birthday? Whatever, fuck if I know."

He's not very smart — by his own admission — and insists on keeping things uncomplicated, at least when it comes to dealing with other people. Izō is more than capable of being nice if he feels like it. Naturally, those who are similar in disposition would get on with him the easiest. Additionally, he's willing to be at least civil to those who are patient and willing to ignore his arrogance and volatility. He doesn't seem to know what to do with softer feelings when he has them and is terrible at masking what he's feeling, so he'll generally cover up those moments by being extra abrasive.

Izō considers himself a genius with the blade — a claim that is well-supported — and he's extremely arrogant when it comes to his skills. He will freely insult other swordsmen but he cannot take what he dishes out at all. Izō takes great personal offence to any criticisms (or what he might interpret as a criticism) of his skills. He hates being laughed at or feeling like someone is mocking him and will respond with sudden rage and potentially violence.

He is described as someone who is very immature. This is seen during his battle with Lancer (Li Shuwen) during the 1945 Imperial Grail storyline where he went into the fight boasting about his skills and then is shocked when he's losing. Lancer actually fully acknowledges and respects Izō's natural talents, which takes Izō by surprise, but goes on to say that fate must have not been kind because he died too young to lose his immature ways and so he lost the opportunity to truly hone his skills and instead lets his childish tendencies weaken him. While being told this was upsetting, he does come to respect Lancer as is reflected in his specific dialogue where he says "Next time won't be like then. Remember it!"

Also, while he is incredibly confident about his sword skills he has a rather low opinion of himself in just about every other area. He defines everything through his identity as a Hitokiri, seeing himself as having value in his ability to kill others and nothing else. This is why his higher level bond dialogue has him asking the Master why they want to want to be close to "someone like him". At his 5th level bond he apologises that killing is the only thing he can do in return.

As Okada Izō was also an actual historical figure, details from his real life are central to the character.

Key themes:
  • Betrayal — Even well after his death, Izō continues to struggle with the events that took place during his life and his role in them. He feels betrayed not only by Takechi Hanpeita and the Tosa Kinnoto (Tosa Loyalist Party) — for whom he'd carried out the assassinations he's known for — but also Sakamoto Ryouma who left both the Tosa Kinnoto and Tosa itself. Ryouma is also a Heroic Spirit summoned to Chaldea, meaning many past issues have been brought to the forefront of his mind simply because Ryouma's presence has been a reminder.

  • Coping — Izō's life was not an easy one and he experienced significant trauma before his death. Much of his experience now involves trying to cope with his thoughts and his feelings. Most of the time his coping mechanisms are poor and self-destructive, but it's a process. During the 4th Wall his desire for total escapism kept him under the effects of the illusion nearly to the end before he ran into Kiyori.

  • Purpose / Growth — Being summoned to Chaldea has an effect on Izō over time as he makes and deepens bonds with others. He is initially confused why he's wanted there or how he's useful if he's not out being an assassin. Over a long time he gains more of a mature perspective on his own life and realises the places he'd made mistakes.

  • Main Motivation: Living it up! As evidenced by his dialogue when asked about what he'd wish for with the Holy Grail:
"Holy Grail? It can grant any wish? That sounds great! I'll ask for a bunch of money so I can live the high life. Living it up ain't worth it unless you go out in a big way."

    Skills:
    • Heroic Spirit / Servant Physiology
      • Servants are able to switch between a Spiritual Body and Material Body at will. In Spiritual Form they are not impeded by walls but cannot carry anything and their senses are limited to spiritual senses.
      • Their Material Body can be damaged but unless damage is done to their Saint Graph Core they cannot be defeated.
      • The Core gradually diminishes from the magical drain and bodily damage. If they sustain too much damage or a lack of magic the Core will be destroyed and the Servant will "die" as it can no longer remain materialised.
      • As a Servant, it is also possible to control his actions via Command Seals, which he is unable to resist once ordered.
      • A Servant's Saint Graph can also be "Ascended" or altered which can change a Servant's appearance or even class.
      • More details about this can be found on the Type-Moon wiki here
      • Izō's Ascensions give him access to several different aesthetic appearances but otherwise he possesses the same skillset. A Servant's weapons are also manifested via the Saint Graph.

    • Presence Concealment B — also known as "Obfuscation". It is the capacity to hide one's presence as a Servant and is a common Class Skill of the Assassin class. Suitable for spying. It is possible to disappear and become extremely difficult to be detected. The rank of Presence Concealment drops considerably when preparing to attack (from Type-Moon wiki)

    • Man-Slayer: A — a swordsmanship skill that specializes in the killing of men. It's considered "a practical skill, the sole purpose of which is victory". It is powerful in that it is aggressive and holds nothing back but has a weakness in that there is little thought or technique to it.

    • Swordsmanship — Izō is considered a "genius of the blade" and is described as a rare "dual class" Servant. While he is definitely of the Assassin class he has swordsmanship on par with a Saber (although he got none of the flashy Saber abilities to go with it).

    • Shimatsuken — Izō's Noble Phantasm which is based in his ability to recreate any sword technique that he's observed once and use it as his own. There is a limitation to this as he can only recreate techniques that do not require special circumstances or magic.

    • Item: just an army officer's cap.

      Sample:
    • 4th wall (log)
    • Network style (from Isle of Avalon)

    • Notes: Izō's power in the 4th Wall event was being able to turn into this dog.
